Assistive Technology

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology Device:

"Any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities."

Assistive Technology Service:

"Any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition or use of an assistive technology device."

Why Assistive Technology?

ALL students, regardless of their abilities, must be given the opportunity to become involved with and progress in the general education curriculum.  Every student must have access to what is being taught.

In order to support the inclusion and participation of students with disabilities in regular education classrooms, ALL individual Education Programs (IEPs) developed for children identified as needing special education services MUST indicate that Assistive Technology has been considered.
