TEC Online Academy 1. Why take a TEC Online Academy course?
The candidate for online learning is the student who is a responsible person and takes charge of his/her own learning. S/he must be capable of managing his time and following a schedule. S/he should be comfortable with technology and willing to try a new approach to learning. Lastly, s/he should be interested in preparing for life beyond high school. 3. Will I receive credit towards graduation for this course?
This is up to the individual school district. Please consult your guidance counselor. 4. Will the course count towards my grade point average?
Policy is specific to each school district. Please consult your guidance counselor or high school principal. 5. What will the experience be like?
Students will be participating in a challenging 18-week online learning experience. Some classes will have an optional face-to-face meeting with instructor and classmates. Students should expect to spend a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week. This coursework will include readings, discussion boards and assignments. There will be a final exam or a culminating project. The students will be expected to sign an Acceptable Use Policy. 6. Who can take courses?
Any high school student currently enrolled in a TEC member school district is eligible and has priority to take an online course. The TEC Online Academy will also welcome other high school students if space allows. This provides a perfect opportunity for home-schooled students to have a collaborative online learning experience. 7. What are the Costs?
Fees for the 2011-2012 School year are $300 per semester course for students in schools that are part of the TEC collaborative and $400 per semester course for students in other high schools or home schooled students. 8. How will I be graded?
These courses will mirror courses similar to your own school. Warnings will be issued midway through the semester and a final exam or a culminating project will be expected. Grades will be sent to your high school. Each school district will determine how and if the grades and credits reflect on the student transcript.
