TEC Initial Teacher Licensure Program
(for secondary subject area teachers)

Goal
To provide participants with the skills necessary to become effective secondary educators with Initial licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Licenses
- Secondary teachers in most disciplines
- Program is NOT for Special Education and Specialist Area license holders
Program Components
- A cohort model, where participants go through the program at the same time
- Five courses with three in the summer, two in two-session modules
- A 40-hour pre-practicum and a 300 or 150-hour practicum usually at the candidate's job site or placement site
- Completion of a portfolio documenting how the candidate has demonstrated the Professional Standards for Teachers
Time
- The program can be completed in one or two years depending upon when the components are done
- Three summer courses that each meet all day for a week
- Four modules (two courses) that meet once per month on Friday evening and all day Saturday from September to May
Requirements
- A completed application form
- Two recommendations
- Passing score on MTEL Communications and Literacy and subject area tests and possession of a Preliminary License
- Copy of current teaching certificate
- Official transcripts
- Statement
- Résumé
- $50 application fee
Cost
- 2010-2011 cost is $4600 for the entire program for teachers in TEC communities
- An additional $500 for teachers in non-TEC communities
