  3. Internships help to set students apart for college/job applications.
  4. Internships give students a realistic view of careers in a real-work environment.
  5. Internships help students begin to build resumes for college and beyond.
  6. Internships help students to learn new skills.
  7. Internships can provide a better understanding of how a professional environment operates.
What is a successful TEC internship?
  1. Students must complete 60-hours of scheduled internship hours.
  2. Students must maintain and complete six journal entries, signed internship agreement, and completed internship evaluation.
  3. Upon conclusion of an internship, TEC will notify the intern's guidance counselor of successful completion.
  4. The students are encouraged to attend our Recognition Ceremony in the fall.
  5. Upon the intern's internship exit interview, a letter of recommendation is requested.
What are the Requirements to participate in an internship?
  1. Students must have completed two years of an accredited high school education.
  2. Students are interviewed for maturity, responsibility and interest in participating in this program.
  3. A second screening process/interview may be necessary for some placements. This is determined by TEC.
  4. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the internship site.
  5. Students arrange their internship work schedule (2-3 days weekly) with their business sponsor.
  6. Participating students should be organized in their assigned tasks.
  7. Students should communicate via the required six reflective journals with their assigned internship coordinator weekly.
  8. Students must display proper dress and respectful behavior at their internship site.
What if I don't know what I want to do?
  1. TEC will interview the student once we receive the application to help decide what career interests they may wish to explore.
  2. Through a series of professional questions we ask students about passions, hobbies, favorite courses etc. This helps to narrow the field of interest. If the student has participated in a career interest analysis through school or outside guidance, the results can be helpful toward internship placement.
REFUNDS
  • There is a non-refundable processing fee of $150 for an internship once it is in process.
  • If a student decides not to participate in their internship as planned, they must notify their internship coordinator within 10 business days of their start date. If this procedure is not followed, the amount of $300 will be withheld from any potential refund. The internship coordinator not the intern will notify the sponsor.
  • If a student is asked to leave their internship due to unacceptable behavior, there is no refund. Unacceptable behavior is determined based on the rules and regulations of the placement.
  • If a student goes on a maximum of 3 interviews toward their internship placement, the career requested will be re-evaluated between the student and the coordinator.
  • If a student is unhappy at their internship placement, they are required to communicate this to their coordinator within the first 10-12 hours. If this requirement is not followed a refund may not be issued.
  • After July 1, there will be no full refunds for any summer intern.
How do I begin the process to participate in an internship?
  1. Participating interns must complete, as directed, the application for the internship. These are available on our web site under applications, in your school's guidance office, or can be sent to you directly via email as an attachment.
  2. Once an application is received we will send you a letter to acknowledge this.
  3. An Internship Coordinator will then be assigned to you. Your coordinator will contact you within 7-10 days via your preferred method of communication to set up an interview date, time and location. Student's interview with coordinator is often in guidance depts. or your local town coffee shop (see #3 in Requirements above).
  4. The initial meeting with your coordinator takes approximately 30 minutes. Please have available any information that might effect your geographical placement and weeks of participation. Consider things such as your summer job, vacation, etc.
  5. An internship placement takes approximately 4-6 weeks after the initial interview.
Do I get paid for my internship?
  1. Internships are unpaid. In lieu of payment, students can receive credit from their school. The schools determine the amount of credit. The credit does not affect your GPA. Some schools give the students community service credits for their internship participation.
How is a placement determined?
  1. After applying to the Internship program, a TEC internship Coordinator interviews the student to learn more about their interests, maturity and to begin forming a placement plan. The Coordinator searches existing and new business contacts for a suitable placement. The business sponsor and intern meet to discuss the internship before setting a start date.
  2. Each custom placement is based upon each student's availability, geographical parameters and needs of business mentor. The student's special skills are considered.
What tasks can a high school intern do?
  1. Depending on the business environment, students may shadow an assigned professional, to assist in ongoing projects, attend meetings, perform tasks, and take on independent projects. Please realize that as a member of any working team, interns may be asked to perform non-glamorous tasks also.
What if I don't like my internship?
  1. We encourage the student and internship coordinator to communicate regularly via email, phone or postal mail to discuss concerns and questions.
  2. If you don't like your internship, call your coordinator within the first 10-12 hours of your internship experience. If you are unable to contact your coordinator, call the Career Services office (781-326-2473 x121).
  3. There is a non-refundable processing fee of $150.00 (please see Refund policy for complete details).
What are the responsibilities of a business sponsor?
  1. Provide a structured work plan for the assigned intern. Work-plan outlines are available to sponsors through the TEC Career Services office.
  2. The business provides supervision by an assigned mentor to the student.
  3. The business provides a safe working environment for the student.
  4. The mentor or business supervisor will meet occasionally with the student to discuss internship progress.
  5. TEC provides the business with the necessary forms for the internship evaluation of the student's performance at the end of the internship.
